Summary

The Telecom Technician is a journey-level field service professional responsible for the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of telecommunications systems in substation and industrial environments. The technician will work independently and as part of a team, engaging in tasks such as conduit installation, structured cabling, equipment configuration, and testing communication protocols. Extensive regional travel to client substations is required, with a focus on safety, efficiency, and clear communication. The Telecom Technician plays a vital role in ensuring system integrity, minimizing outages, and delivering exceptional service to clients. 


Primary Responsibilities 

  • Establish communication systems by installing, operating, and maintaining voice and data telecommunications circuits and equipment within substations. 
  • Significant regional travel to client substations with extended project assignments up to 3 weeks. 
  • Plan and execute network installations by studying customer orders, schematics, manuals, and technical specifications; gathering tools, equipment, and materials; assessing installation sites; and preparing installation diagrams. 
  • Conduct mechanical installations, including work with conduit (1” or lower preferred) and other structured cabling tasks. 
  • Verify and maintain service by testing circuits, equipment, and communication protocols; identifying, correcting, or escalating issues. 

     
  • Review, revise, and/or develop isolation and restoration work plans, perform preparation of integrated functional test plans, and performance of functional tests

     
  • Review Client and contract drawings. Assure all trip and communication Circuits are analyzed and isolated to prevent inadvertent trips during construction and testing.
  • Install and troubleshoot mechanical and network systems, ensuring alignment with safety and quality standards. 
  • Perform soldering tasks as needed (preferred skill). 
  • Engage with clients effectively by resolving concerns, answering questions, and providing updates throughout projects. 
  • Maintain proper documentation, including labeling and routing equipment/cables and recording configuration diagrams. 
  • Collaborate with client control centers to ensure outages are minimized and processes are communicated clearly. 
  • Support inventory needs by monitoring stock, verifying receipts, and notifying the Warehouse Manager when orders are required. 
  • Uphold high housekeeping standards on worksites (e.g., clean installations, proper cable securing, and organized work areas). 
  • Participate in site surveys, installs, and troubleshooting with team members, leveraging opportunities for skill development. 
  • Follow all safety guidelines, including working safely around high-voltage equipment and in industrial environments. 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Experience working in substation environments (required). 
  • Must have reliable transportation for travel between sites.
  • Ability to travel regionally, including extended project assignments up to 3 weeks. 
  • Familiarity with conduit installations (1” or lower preferred). 
  • Understanding of communication protocols and network troubleshooting. 
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with structured cabling and physical installations. 
  • Basic soldering experience (preferred). 
  • Strong customer-facing and communication skills. 
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, rack elevation drawings, and construction packages. 
  • Reliable transportation capable of carrying tools and equipment to substations. 
  • Strong organizational, troubleshooting, and attention-to-detail skills. 
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Commitment to adhering to safety protocols, including proper use of PPE (e.g., boots, Arc-Rated clothing). 


Education and Work Experience 

  • 3-5 years of experience as a telecommunications technician or in a similar field, preferably in substations or industrial settings. 
  • Associate’s Degree with 2+ years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

     

Physical Requirements 

​​Work is typically performed in an environment, using simple, easy muscular movements, involving only the handling of light materials, tools, or equipment in easy work positions, and with no special speed requirements or long stretches of exertion. Vision requirements for this job include close vision and the ability to focus. Remaining in a stationary position and in front of a computer screen for prolonged periods will be necessary. Repeating motions such as typing, that may include wrists, hands and/or fingers are necessary. Moderate physical effort may be necessary. May require stooping, bending, kneeling, periodic lifting up to 50 pounds, crawling and walking. Requires dexterity to connect network and server equipment, peripherals, and make minor repairs to computer equipment.​ Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, ascend and descend to great heights, and traverse uneven terrains. Ability to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Ability to remain in stationary positions for extended periods of time. Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) i.e., boots, Arc-Rated clothing as needed when traveling on site to adhere to appropriate safety standards. ​
