Overview 2025-2026 CORNELL INFORMATION SCIENCE FULL-TIME TEACHING FACULTY SEARCH (OPEN-RANK TEACHING PROFESSOR), ITHACA CAMPUS The Cornell University Department of Information Science (IS) in the Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science (Bowers) invites applications for full-time, long-term, open-rank Teaching Professor positions at Cornell’s Ithaca campus. Founded with a historical commitment to educating “any person in any study”, Cornell University is located in Ithaca, New York, with a county population of about 100,000 people in the heart of the Finger Lakes region. Both Cornell and Ithaca offer a wide range of cultural activities, sports, and outdoor activities with the pleasures of both city and country close at hand. Our nearly 40 faculty members are leaders in their respective fields within Information Science's interdisciplinary structure, specializing in areas like data science, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, natural language processing, ubiquitous computing, user-experience design, tech-law policy, and much more. IS is housed in Cornell’s Gates Hall and a new building completed in 2025. The department has strong connections with several other units on campus, including Computer Science, Communication, Economics, Sociology, Science and Technology Studies, Operations Research and Information Engineering, and Cognitive Science. These connections support the IS Department’s mission to advance our understanding of how people and society interact with computing and information. Responsibilities Teaching faculty hired in these positions will be full-time members of the IS Department; a typical full-time (100%) load for a Teaching Professor in IS is two courses per semester. Based on candidate qualifications and experience, the initial appointment will be either a three-year (Assistant Teaching Professor) or five-year (Associate or Full Teaching Professor) appointment. This is a non-tenured professional teaching track with the potential for growth, the expectation of renewal, and eventual promotion for Teaching Professors. Evaluation is through a combination of student course feedback, peer teaching evaluations, and assessments of course design and impact from experts outside the department. The department offers a competitive benefits package and salary. Teaching Professors play a full and active part in departmental life, ranging from educational leadership such as curriculum design to department governance with voting rights and eligibility for administrative roles. Cornell University also seeks to meet the needs of dual career couples, with both its own Dual Career program and membership in the Upstate New York Higher Education Recruitment Consortium to assist with dual career searches. We are seeking candidates who will contribute to a mix of undergraduate and masters courses in one or more of the wide range of topics covered by IS. Teaching Professors both develop new courses and teach existing courses. Current courses cover web programming and design; application development; human-computer interaction; human-AI interaction; information visualization; data science and artificial intelligence; network science; and information ethics, law, and policy. These courses are taught at both the introductory and advanced level and are offered to smaller (20-50 students) or larger (150+ students) audiences. Candidates with PhDs in Information Science, Computer Science, or related areas are encouraged to apply. More information about the breadth of courses in the department is available at the information page. Candidates are also encouraged to look at the curricula for the Ithaca campus undergraduate and Masters of Professional Studies degrees.
