Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Staff Systems Safety Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our High-Altitude Long Endurance UAS Systems Safety Team. This role is located in Rancho Bernardo, CA. In this role you will be supporting continued safe flight analysis of various system configurations as they are modified for capability enhancement / sustainment. System Safety engineering is a unique discipline that encourages individuals to (1) analytically examine function, (2) acquire relevant data / information, and (3) justify conclusions in order model cause effect relationships of a complex system in various conditions. There are many opportunities day to day that promote specialty skill set development and collaboration across various engineering, test, airworthiness, end user groups. What you get to do! Independently analyze and recommend safety criteria in system design, equipment and procedures to mitigate or eliminate hazards. Evaluate systems, associated support equipment and facilities, networks and information systems to ensure designs meet applicable safety specifications and standards. Apply knowledge, methodologies and principles of safety engineering as defined in MIL-STD-882. Apply methodologies, best practices and principles of safety engineering as defined in corresponding System Safety Program Plan (SSPP). Understand and work IAW applicable system safety industry standards e.g., US Air Force Instructions (AFIs), NASA Procedural Requirements (NPRs), SAE Aerospace Recommended Practices (ARPs), FAA Advisory Circulars (ACs), Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics Documents (RTCA DO’s), and Code of Federal Regulations – Title 14 (Aeronautics & Space). Prepare engineering and technical analyses, reports, and other technical documentation, host internal peer review, and facilitate configuration managed release in support of Airworthiness Certification IAW MIL-HDBK-516. Collaborate with Systems Engineering, Software Engineering and System Test organization to ensure acceptable safety critical function verification. Reviews architecture, requirements and interface artifacts for safety on complex hardware/ software systems. Proactively support planned work for successful on time delivery of safety product(s) i.e., periodically communicate dependencies, progress / blockers with stakeholders. Model system function failure conditions with Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) IAW SAE ARP 4761. Lead information acquisition efforts from relevant responsible engineers (REs), subject matter experts (SMEs), field data, etc. to support safety analysis. Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detailed trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications. Basic Qualifications: Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline AND 12 years of related professional/military experience in Systems Engineering, OR a master’s degree in STEM discipline AND 10 years of related professional/military experience in Systems Engineering, OR a PhD degree in STEM discipline AND 8 years of related professional/military experience in Systems Engineering. Must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of leadership and work independently. Must have demonstrated and be willing to independently manage multiple tasks with various stakeholders in parallel i.e., assess design changes, field reported issues, system deficiencies, ‘pop-up’ tasking, etc. Must have greater than 3 years of experience practicing System Safety Engineering Must be independently motivated to learn new methods / practices of analysis. Must be proficient Microsoft Office tools e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point. Must have ability to obtain and maintain DoD Secret Clearance. Must have ability to obtain and maintain Program Access (PAR) within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs. Preferred Qualifications: Familiar with Department of Defense (DoD) system capability development e.g., Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase and sustainment phase of a capability e.g., Operations & Support (O&S). Ability to grow / enhance a process or product by applying your own unique skillset and perspective. Experience in military aviation. An active DoD Secret clearance or higher. Familiarity with aerospace / general flight mechanics e.g., lift, attitude, navigation, etc. Familiarity with military Systems Safety and process standards and their Industry equivalent such as: MIL-STD-882, DO-178B/C, DO-248, DO-254, ARP-4754, ARP-4761, MIL-HDBK-516C, etc. Experience in aviation software development / integration engineering. Experience directly supporting the airworthiness certification of an aircraft / unmanned system #ASSystEng Salary Range: $171,000 - $256,400 The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
