The City of Tukwila is a dynamic suburb of Seattle, Washington. A unique city, Tukwila is one of the most diverse communities in the country, with more than 80 languages spoken in its schools. Also located in Tukwila is the largest retail mall in the Pacific Northwest. While less than 22,000 people reside in Tukwila, more than 47,000 work in the City every day and more than 150,000 go in and out of the city daily. The City has 347 FTEs, 90 temporary extra labor and nine labor unions. Tukwila is a full-service city, with its own Police and Public Works department.
The Police Records Specialist is part of the Support Operations Division and the Records Unit. Under the direction of the Police Records Supervisor, a Police Records Specialist performs a variety of administrative duties, including records management, information processing, data entry, record review and redaction, direct officer support, customer service and related duties in support of police operations. Since the Tukwila Police Department operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, there is always a Police Records Specialist on duty. The shifts vary from five 8hr days to four 10hr days; from day shifts (starting at 5:15 or 9:00 a.m.) to swing shifts (starting at 3 p.m.) to graveyard shifts (starting at 7:30 p.m.). A Police Records Specialist is required to work any of the different shifts when assigned. Successful Police Records Specialist are individuals who learn quickly, stay organized in the midst of interruptions, communicate well, handle stressful situations, enjoy a fast-paced work environment, stay calm and accurately complete records management and data entry.
A Police Records Specialist is often the first person a caller or visitor will interact with when reaching out to the Tukwila Police Department. A Police Records Specialist answers phones, provides fingerprinting services to the public, assists with community education programs, answers questions, looks up information, processes payments for services, and issues Concealed Pistol Licenses. A Police Records Specialist also fulfills public records requests through a software system called GovQA by collecting reports, photos, audio recordings and videos. If the requested information cannot be shared, the Police Records Specialist will take out (or redact) the portions of the documents or recordings that cannot be released. In addition to serving the residents of Tukwila, a Police Records Specialist provides support to the commissioned staff by working in tandem with officers on the street and assisting with the records management work related to patrol duties. A Police Records Specialist will routinely search local, state, federal, and even international databases to assist officers and detectives with locating information pertinent to their investigations and cases. A Police Records Specialist assists with building security monitoring and providing access to officers into the holding area. This position also assists the Tukwila City Prosecutor by providing information and records upon request. When processing case reports, a Police Records Specialist must ensure accurate, complete, and timely information processing when entering information to the local Records Management System and various state and federal databases. These types of entries include stolen and impounded vehicles, warrants, protection orders, missing persons, and stolen and recovered articles. A Police Records Specialist reviews cases for completeness and maintains agency records in accordance with the Washington State Records Retention Guidelines.
