Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and creative Photography Instructor to teach a variety of courses, ranging from photo lighting and experimental techniques to darkroom photography. The role involves guiding students through the art and technical aspects of photography, helping them develop their skills in both digital and analog formats. Courses may include:
Introduction to Digital Photography
Digital Photography and Image Editing I & II
Innovative iPhone Photography
Darkroom Photography
Advanced Photography Techniques
Key Responsibilities
Design and deliver a comprehensive photography curriculum that includes both foundational and advanced techniques. You will teach the principles of exposure, composition, lighting, and other essential elements while allowing students to practice through hands-on projects.
Prepare engaging lectures, create assignments, and provide insightful critiques of student work, blending theory with practical applications.
Teach both analog and digital photography, ensuring students are proficient in traditional camera operation, darkroom processes, as well as modern digital tools and editing software.
Engage students in various environments including the darkroom, studio, and virtual classrooms, offering personalized feedback and fostering an encouraging learning environment.
For remote instruction, utilize platforms like LMS Canvas, Zoom, and digital portfolio tools to deliver effective and interactive online learning experiences.
Qualifications
Required:
MFA in Visual Arts or a related field.
Preferred:
MFA in Photography, with a robust portfolio demonstrating professional experience or artistic achievements, such as exhibitions or published work.
A passion for the history and context of photography, with a particular interest in Native American photography.
Knowledge & Skills
Deep understanding of various photographic techniques, including portraiture, commercial photography, landscape, and documentary styles.
Proficiency in lighting techniques and experimental approaches such as cyanotype, photomontage, and double exposure.
Ability to clearly explain and demonstrate photography techniques while fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Abilities
Strong enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring students, with the ability to develop clear goals, objectives, and assignments for each course.
Familiarity with LMS systems (such as Canvas) to create and manage course materials.
In-person instruction will be essential, especially for hands-on topics like lighting and darkroom techniques.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
The instructor will have access to a well-equipped darkroom and studio space, including cameras, lighting setups, and printing tools.
Some face-to-face instruction may be required, and certification in QM (Quality Matters) for remote instruction is a plus.
Additional Information
The role may require some travel and a flexible schedule to accommodate both in-person and virtual instruction.
