The University of Washington Investment Management Company (UWINCO) manages over $9 billion of endowment, operating, and life income funds for the University. The funds are invested in a diversified mix of traditional and alternative investments with a significant allocation outside of the United States. Reporting directly to the Chief Investment Officer (“CIO”), the Investment Associate position provides research and analytical support to the UWINCO team. Responsibilities include collection and compilation of data and information for investment research, attribution analysis, risk management reporting, performance analysis and asset allocation review. This position will also be involved in the use of existing information management systems and training and mentoring the UWINCO Investment Analysts. This position requires strong analytical abilities, as well as excellent communication and writing skills to support and present investment team research, data and performance analysis. This position requires independent judgment in research planning and decision-making with regard to all aspects of investments within the UWINCO office. Must be capable of managing multiple and competing priorities with frequent tight deadlines skillfully, accurately and confidentially while demonstrating discretion and independent judgment in all areas of operation. Flexibility to work long hours as needed. Significant domestic and international travel required. The UWINCO Office manages over $9 billion of endowment, operating and life income funds for the University. Successful management of the portfolio has a multi-million dollar impact on the value of the University’s endowment and operating funds. Endowment and operating distributions to campus currently total over $200 million annually and will continue to grow over time. Gains and/or losses in endowment and operating funds investment portfolios affect all campus departments. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Investment Research (50%) Research managers and strategies, using quantitative and qualitative approaches to develop analytical insights. Perform strategic and thematic investment research. Assist with manager due diligence and monitoring across the portfolio, including analysis of manager investment strategy, portfolio positions, performance, and fit within the portfolio. Work closely with UWINCO team on due diligence including onsite visits, analysis, and the preparation and presentation of materials supporting investment decisions. Meet regularly with potential managers to evaluate potential fit in the portfolio. Maintain and track the pipeline of prospective managers. Write and present investment memos for prospective investments to the investment team. Represent UWINCO at conferences and annual meetings held by managers and external research groups. Portfolio Management & Asset Allocation (25%) Contribute to asset allocation, risk management, and other elements of portfolio construction. Help prepare broader strategy and portfolio reviews. Assist with the development and maintenance of asset class models and databases. Perform capital markets analysis and research on an as needed basis. Staff Recruiting, Training and Mentoring (15%) Train and mentor current UWINCO Investment Analysts. Participate in the recruiting process for new Investment Analysts. Attend career fairs and recruiting class visits. Special Projects / Other (10%) Provide applicable administrative support to the team which includes scanning, filing, meeting preparation, copying documents, creating PowerPoint presentations as needed. Complete other duties as assigned. Significant Domestic And International Travel Required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's degree, preferably in Business or Economics. Six years' investment experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to function independently. Self-directed individual with a strong work ethic. Excellent oral and written communication skills in an environment requiring diplomacy and judgment in managing interactions with individuals at all levels inside and outside the organization. Ability to adjust to rapid changes and execute fluid management of multiple priorities in a highly dynamic environment. Demonstrated success in roles requiring strategic, creative thinking and problem solving. Extensive use of spreadsheets and data systems. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and statistical software. Desired Qualifications Familiarity with investment management concepts and terminology. Familiarity with Bloomberg financial data system. CFA preferred. WORKING CONDITIONS Individual is required to work the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks, and must be able to be flexible regarding work schedule in order to communicate and coordinate with people in a wide variety of time zones. Significant domestic and international travel required. Work can be intense and high pressured at times, and requires a high degree of flexibility in managing multiple responsibilities.
