General Statement of Duties
Facilitates communication between hearing impaired students and others within the educational environment.Relays information to and from the deaf student and others; interprets and transliterates both voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice communication.
Must have considerable knowledge of hearing impaired language and culture; interpretation and transliteration methodologies, and practices of related state and federal guidelines and code of ethics.A working knowledge of English language and grammar and of school policies and procedures is required.Must demonstrate ability to interpret voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice quickly, accurately and clearly; to quickly determine specific communicative needs of students and be able to develop positive and effective working relationships with students, teachers, staff, and the public; to work independently and to prioritize work schedules.
Essential Duties
- Interpret all content and special subject areas for deaf or hard-of-hearing students, grades K-12, as deemed necessary by the students' Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
- Interpret for IEP meetings, parent conferences and Deaf staff members (ASL teacher and assistants).
- Interpret for other activities during the school day to include assemblies, theatrical performances, announcements, musicals, and field trips.
- Interpret other assignments outside the school day such as tutoring, club meetings, disciplinary actions, bus situations, sports, PTA meetings, summer school, and weekend summer and evening field trips.
- Interpret interactions of deaf students with administrators, guidance counselors, librarians and other staff members.
- Interpretation for deaf parents attending HCPS related activities.
- Prepare for all interpreting assignments to ensure accurate representation of the material being presented.
- Serve as a resource for teachers, administrators and other staff members regarding the role of the interpreter and promote cultural understanding.
- Provides general classroom assistance to the teacher, including tutoring, small group instruction or activities, correcting work assignments and preparing educational materials.
- Assists teachers and staff with identifying and resolving issues with hearing impaired students.
- Continue professional development by attending workshops and classes to acquire and maintain state or national certification recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma required; Associate degree or higher preferred.Must hold Level III Virginia Quality Assurance Screening certificate or other state or national certification recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as equivalent to or exceeding the VQAS Level III.
Additional Information
This position is a part-time/temporary position working no more than 29 hours per week.Hourly rate is based on education and experience.
