JOB SUMMARY :

Maintains the security of the public and the Correctional Institution by enforcing discipline and order with the inmates in the facility and on work crews and securing a safe and clean environment for inmates and employees.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Receives and searches new inmates for weapons and contraband; receives, labels, and stores all personal property of each inmate until release or transfer; assigns a county number and dorm house to inmates; places inmate in proper dorm house.
  • Patrols facility and grounds providing security of all areas including the dorms, recreational yard and recreational rooms; maintains constant watch and reports any unusual circumstances or occurrences to superior officers; holds monthly fire drills.
  • Distributes meals and medication as directed; inspects dormitories and assures all cell doors are locked;; controls TV, heat, and lighting from cages in each dorm; checks on isolation cells.
  • Transports inmate work crews to job sites; guards inmates while they perform manual labor tasks such as cutting grass, patching roads, cleaning curbs, clearing rights-of-way, picking up trash, trimming limbs, cleaning rest rooms, painting, clearing ditches, moving furniture, unloading trucks, and janitorial duties.
  • May relieve a superior officer as needed.
  • Transports inmates to and from the doctor, dentist, courthouse or any other location necessary; may serve on the disciplinary or classification committee.
  • May be assigned to oversee the building and maintenance of compactor sites; orders supplies and performs construction work; maintains all grounds at the Correctional Institution.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

When Assigned to Traffic Engineering:

  • Inspects, installs and maintains all traffic and street signs and prepares and pints street, traffic and special signs according to Uniform Traffic Control codes and ordinances.
  • Inspects traffic and street signs to insure signs are properly posted and visible to motorist; replaces damaged or missing signs.
  • Determines sign location; installs street, traffic and special signs; digs holes and sets posts, attaches sign to posts.
  • Oversees the work of inmate detail involved in the installation of traffic signs and devices.
  • Draws and paints traffic, street and special signs; utilizes sign and paint machines daily.
  • Lays out, marks, and paints parking lots; paints stop bars, center lines, and crosswalks, and arrows on County streets; makes price estimates to other departments requesting parking lot marking and sign painting.
  • Obtains pricing for signs, paint and paint equipment and supplies; prepares and submits purchase orders for approval; maintains inventory.
  • Maintains work order file and daily activity log.
  • Confers with the public; obtains and/or provides street sign and marking information.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

  • Education and Experience:
    • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
    • No experience required.
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • POST Certification required within one year.
    • Valid Commercial Drivers License or ability to get license within six months of hire and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures used in controlling and maintaining discipline among inmates.
    • Knowledge of modern principles of criminology and penology.
    • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and laws governing the housing and supervision of inmates.
    • Knowledge of general office procedures and policies including filing, indexing, and records maintenance.
    • Ability to deal effectively with inmates and to maintain discipline.

  • Physical Ability: Essential functions continuously require the ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting/standing); move oneself about the worksite by walking; bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs, twisting at the waist, hips or knees; move oneself by crawling on hands and knees; ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and ramps; reach overhead; position oneself by crouching/kneeling; maintain body equilibrium to prevent failing when walking, standing, crouching or navigating narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces; push or pull items; repetitively use had/arms/legs; and grasp items. Incumbents constantly must think analytically; handle stress and emotion, concentrate on tasks, remember names and other details; examine and observe details; make decisions, and adjust to change. Essential functions continuously require incumbents be able to work irregular hours (nights/weekends); direct others; handle confidential information; maintain stamina during the work day; meet deadlines; operate equipment; and stay organized.
    • Essential functions frequently require the ability to move/transport items weighing up to 50lbs. Essential functions frequently require incumbents to be on call; use a keyboard/type; and use math/calculations.
    • Essential functions occasionally require the ability to move/transport items weighing between 51lbs and 100lbs. Essential functions occasionally require incumbents to attend work related meetings or trainings.
  • Sensory Ability: Essential Functions require the ability to use effective verbal and written communication; and use of hand/eye coordination and fine manipulation to use tools and equipment.
  • Environmental Factors: Essential functions are continuously performed with exposure to risk of bodily injury from biological hazards; and wet, slippery floors/surfaces. Incumbents continuously must be able to work with others.
    • Essential functions are frequently performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including inclement weather or dry environments; extreme hot or cold temperatures; risk of bodily injury from hazards including chemical and sharp objects/tools; dirt/mud, fumes, gases, odors, dust; moving mechanical parts; and extreme noise.
    • Essential functions are occasionally performed with exposure to risk of bodily injury from hazards including electrical and heavy machinery; high places/high heights; constricted spaces; grease and oil; hot temperature devices including burners; and vibration.
    • Incumbents regularly must be able to work around equipment/machinery ; drive county vehicles and other equipment; and walk on uneven ground.
